“Time to Say Goodbye”

It’s always hard to watch as the new “kids” leave the farm – happy for them but sad at the same time – for me.  If I could I would keep them….Every One!  Phil & I both become so attached to them.  Well, how could you not?  You spend your days with their Dam’s & their Sires –  365 –  thru sickness and in health, driving rain and freezing cold, sweltering heat.   You plan their pairings.  Your nights at kidding time are totally dedicated – cold barns, uncomfortable cots, little “good sleep” – but you are “the keeper and the “caregiver” – the one who is responsible.

They are comforted at kidding time by your presence during those cold nights when time is getting close.    When the reading lamp, the cot and sleeping bag move in to the barn – they know.  And there you are – farm life in “real time”.  Watching, listening, praying all will go well this season and all the kids will arrive like swan divers….like the shape of a banana…front feet and nose first or back hooves up!  Wouldn’t it be lovely!  That’s a perfect world!

In our world…the real one…we count on being tested every season. Not all kids come easy.  This season was no exception.  Triplets, twelve + pound singles, breaches, tangles and those wonderful & perfect “banana” deliveries.    AND THEN…..BEFORE YOU KNOW IT!  “IT’S TIME TO SAY GOODBYE!”  May God Bless them…Every One !
